WINTER REGIMEN
12 Step Program For Your Skin – Vacation Edition

With the holidays ahead of us, a vacation with your loved ones is probably on the books. While it may be common to toss healthy habits out the door while away from home, why not utilize this time for a total mind, body, soul, and skin reset instead?!

Maintaining a proper diet with adequate hydration and ample sleep is quite the task when fun awaits you around every corner. Ok, I actually do a good job staying hydrated, but forget well-balanced meals and 7+ hours of sleep every night, haha. This simple 12 step program helps me stay on track while traveling, so I’m hoping it can to the same for you!

1: SPF! SPF! SPF!
Always protect yourself from sunburns (especially on tropical vacations) with SPF 50. Reapply every 2 hours and don’t forget your lips. There is nothing worse than a bad burn your first day of vacay!

2: BREAK OUT THOSE SUNNIES
Your eyes and the skin around them are uber sensitive, so in addition to SPF you should protect those pretty eyes with a chic pair of sunglasses.

3: STAY HYDRATED
Maintaining proper hydration can be difficult while traveling, but if you want to keep up your energy and avoid dehydration, keep a water bottle handy to refill as you go about your adventures.

4: CHOOSE YOUR DAIRY WISELY
Cheese is my vice – especially while wining and dining my way around European cities. Dairy is known to cause breakouts and compromise that pretty complexion, so be wise with your overall consumption.

5: JUST SAY NO TO SODIUM
When you wake up puffy and with a lackluster complexion, you can blame sodium for a lot of that. Try not to keep snacks on hand high in preservatives, and drink lots of water to flush those salty meals right out.

6: COOL DOWN
Hot water can dehydrate the skin and strip the skin of necessary nutrients, so skip the scolding end-of-day shower for a cooling and soothing one.

7: STAY OUT OF THAT JACUZZI
The heat and steam of a jacuzzi always sounds like a good way to unwind, but too much time in it will surely suck the life out of your skin. Limiting your time in any hot body of water will prevent dehydration and cracked skin.

8: ALOE IS A MUST
Aloe is incredibly soothing and healing, so after a day out in the sun, lather it on after a nice cool shower. Your skin will feel rejuvenated and nourished for a good nights rest!

9: AVOID HEAVY MAKEUP
Opt for a tinted SPF and non-comedogenic products while on vacation. This will allow your skin to breathe and remain breakout free.

10: RINSE IT OFF
Whether you’re playing in the pool or in the ocean, rinsing off that chlorine and salt is essential in maintaining hydration and avoiding adverse skin reactions. Don’t forget to reapply SPF when you’re all cleaned up!

11: WASH THOSE LOCKS
Hair holds onto environmental pollutants and product buildup which wreak havoc on the skin when transferred to your pillowcase. Make sure you’re rinsing your hair after swimming and washing it before bed to prevent irritating your skin.

12: UNPLUG
Keeping stress levels low while traveling will help keep your skin free of unnecessary breakouts, so enable that out of office message and don’t skip out on fun to catch up on work. You’ll be far more productive upon your return if you can leave work behind.

Depending on the type of trip you’re on, you may be able to keep up your normal skin care routine, which will prevent some of the post-vacation damage. However, if you’re traveling to a tropical place, it’s more difficult to maintain your regimen as some products sensitize your skin, so using them in the sun is a big N.O. Don’t fret, though. It’s simple to incorporate some work-arounds while outside of your normal routine. If you can commit to these 12 steps, you’ll be well on your way to a healthier vacay life!

Woman with Facial Mask
Facial Masking Done Right

Skin care is becoming quite the trending topic as makeup tutorials have dominated social media and YouTube over the last few years. Pore refining treatments and facial masks can be found at virtually every beauty counter in sight. It’s the easiest DIY treatment, so I highly recommend adding a couple different masks to your regimen. You’ll want to focus on nourishing your skin with masks best suited for you and not just following the “hype” behind the mask itself.

If your skin is dry and/or dehydrated, seek masks containing hydrating ingredients.

  • Vitamin B
  • Vitamin E
  • Hyaluronic Acid
  • Glycerin

For oily/acne prone skin, opt for masks with clarifying and detoxifying ingredients.

  • Clay
  • Charcoal
  • Sulfur
  • Hydroxy Acids
  • Benzoyl Peroxide

Anti-aging masks are also a great addition to your regimen. Look for ingredients that target fine lines/wrinkles.

  • Vitamin A
  • Retinol
  • Peptides
  • Coenzyme Q10
  • Glycolic Acid
  • Hydroxy Acids

You can also brighten up your complexion with masks that target sun damage and/or uneven skin tones.

  • Vitamin C
  • Arbutin
  • Kojic Acid
  • Azaleic Acid
  • Hydroxy Acids

Should you have inflammation due to acne, sensitivity, sun exposure, etc. you’ll want to incorporate soothing ingredients into your masking regimen.

  • Aloe Vera
  • Cucumber
  • Oatmeal
  • Panthenol

All too often, people misinterpret an oily t-zone or minor breakouts for oily/acneic skin and use and opt for detoxifying clay masks. The problem with that is when applied over the entire face, you risk stripping your skin of nutrients, thus causing dehydration. Signs of that would be a tight, flaky, dulled complexion. I’m sure you can recall making this mistake at least once – we’ve all be there!
Next time, simply spot treat your breakout zones with the clay mask to avoid any mishaps.

To ensure you’re using the appropriate type of mask for your skin, don’t be afraid to ask your Aesthetician questions during your next facial. Masking a couple times a week will help your skin maintain that glow in between facial appointments. Remember, great skin doesn’t happen by chance, it happens by appointment!

7 Tips For Treating Acne

Blemish prone skin has the ability to make or break your day, so there is, legit, nothing more stressful than struggling with acne. It’s the most common skin condition in America, difficult to treat, impacts self-esteem, and can lead to additional skin conditions. Through trial and error with my issues and those of my clients, I’ve learned how to better manage breakouts with some simple methods. You’ll find my top 7 tips here, so keep on reading!

1: DON’T PICK
Trust me, I know popping a good pimple is extremely satisfying, but when not done properly, you risk spreading bacteria under the skin and creating “sister” pimples surrounding it. Improper extraction also causes trauma to the follicle which often leads to scaring and hyperpigmentation.

2: KEEP IT CLEAN
Never skip your nightly cleanse! Removing excess oil and debris is essential in controlling breakouts. Seek cleansers with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide – these ingredients increase cell turnover to speed up the healing process and help prevent future breakouts.

3: DRY IT OUT
Rather than picking at your blemish, focus on drying it out with a detoxifying mask and spot treatment. Your blemish can’t thrive if without oil, so drying it out will surely inhibit its lifespan!

4: SAY NO TO ALCOHOL
Let’s not get crazy, I’m referring to alcohol based toners, not cocktails, haha. Alcohol and Witch Hazel can overly dry and strip the skin which leads to dehydration. There is no need to dry out the entire face when treating acne/breakouts.

5: NOURISH YOUR SKIN
Acne cleansers and spot treatments can be overly drying, so don’t forget to nourish your skin with hydrating serums and a light moisturizer. You can also switch things up by using nourishing/hydrating cleansers and drying moisturizer. A regimen consisting solely of drying products can exacerbate breakouts and strip the skin of necessary nutrients.

6: SKIP HOME REMEDIES
The most common home remedies include drying out blemishes with toothpaste and/or lemon. These methods can actually further irritate the skin and increase inflammation, so it’s best to stick to clinical methods.

7: GET AN AESTHETICIAN
The best way to ensure you’re treating acne and breakout prone skin appropriately, enlist the help of a skin specialist. Customized treatments and self-care regimen can be established to monitor progress and get your skin glowing again.

If you’ve tried all of the above and still have severe inflammation and breakouts, it may be time to see a Dermatologist. You may have underlying issues that can’t be diagnosed or “cured” without the help of a physician. Take control of your acne/breakouts and get back to loving your skin!
