When I first got the travel bug, I was soooo that girl who would pack 2 outfits per day, all of my favorite shoes, every beauty product under the sun, and multiple hair styling tools. These days, I’m far more savvy and pack lightly to avoid travel delays, additional airline fees, and unnecessary stress. Perhaps I should mention that my luggage was once lost for a month while traveling abroad, so I may actually be guided more by fear than “savvy”, haha.

Whether it’s for work or pleasure, travel is a BIG part of my life. Because I travel often, I’ve found creative ways to maximize space in what airlines allow as carry-ons. Truth be told, I often use my amazing Zuca bag as a carry-on. It’s made for pro makeup artists on the go so I put that baby to use even when I’m not on the road for work. Another tip for carry-ons is to take a backpack in lieu of a handbag. This will provide additional space for electronics, personal items, and an extra jacket.

Packing clothing basics that can be washed and air-dried for reuse are ideal, along with 1 pair of jeans, a few nice dinner outfits, and a couple pairs of fancy shoes. I always layer comfy clothing for the flight as to not overstuff my luggage. You should roll your clothes rather than fold them to save space. This will give leave some spare room in your bag for souvenirs purchased during your travels. More often than not, I find myself packing one more pair of shoes or another outfit in that extra space, only to regret it while packing to come home. Someday I’ll take my own advice, haha!

If you’re a skin care junkie like me, it’s difficult to leave favorite products behind. Maintaining your daily regimen on vacay is simple if you stick with multi-functional products. An exfoliating cleanser, toner that doubles as a setting mist, nourishing moisturizer, and SPF will cover your facial needs. Hotels provide complimentary toiletries so you can rely on them for the majority of those. My hair freaks out with with all hotel conditioners so packing my own is a must. Texturizing spray and a flat iron top off the hair essentials. You can curl, add waves, or straighten your locks with just the one tool, so there’s no need for anything more.

Airbnb is all the rage now, so if your rental doesn’t provide freebies similar to hotels, you can always purchase travel sized items at the local convenience store (or duty free airport shop!). This will allow more space in your luggage for those items you just can’t leave behind. Trust me, traveling lightly is such a game-changer. Less time waiting around at baggage claim means more time exploring new cities!!!
