How To Choose Makeup For Your Skin Tone And The Seasons

Just as style options shift when the seasons change, makeup trends do the same. The slightest pop of color on the eyes or a bold lip is all it takes to easily switch things up throughout the year. Ironically, I love to dress for Spring/Summer, while my favorite makeup hues are the Fall/Winter ones – good thing I live in sunny Los Angeles and can mix it up as I see fit!

In order to determine the colors that work best for you, you’ll have to examine your complexion. Cool complexions have a little rosiness and/or bluish undertones in them, while warm complexions have golden or peachy undertones. This will help you with selecting shades that compliment your skin tone best. I have cool undertones in my skin so I stick with cool based products.

Cool products have more of a blue base to them so they’re typically deeper in pigment. Warm products have a yellow base so they tend to be a bit more mellow. I’m sure you’ve noticed makeup bases in lipsticks by how well they work with your skin. I love bright summery colors but they look terrible on me! Eyeshadows are a bit trickier as certain tones that may not initially seem to be a fit for your skin tone, but they compliment your eye color. You’ll have to play with them a bit more to find the right hues to make those pretty eyes pop.

FALL/WINTER

For Fall and Winter you’ll want to incorporate deeper tones, reds, and earthy nudes into your makeup of the day. You can dress up your eyes with colors that pair well with your lipstick, or by adding a classic winged liner for a more subtle look when rocking a bold lippie.

SPRING/SUMMER
For the lips, pinkish nudes, bright hues, and shimmery glosses are great for Spring and Summer. Adding pastels or eye-popping colors as accents to your eye makeup is also a great way to spruce up your look of the day.

For some initial help determining your skin tone, take this quiz I found on POPSUGAR Beauty. You can also test products on your hand while makeup shopping to see if they compliment your complexion. And while I know makeup counter girls can often be intimidating, don’t be afraid to ask them for recommendations to make your life easier.

Lip Scrub
3 Simple DIY Lip Scrubs

My biggest grievance with touching up my makeup is dry and/or flaky lips. Being forced to remove the lipstick base just to reapply the same color is such a nuisance, right?! Please tell me you agree and I’m not just a crazy person with this pet-peeve, haha.

Let’s say you don’t think I’m a nut-job on the above and are seeking a solution. I’ve found using a lip scrub followed by a nourishing lip treatment a few times a week to be an effective remedy. While I’m all about professional treatments, I can’t justify spending $20 on a lip scrub, so I concocted my own solution with ingredients from my pantry. And because I don’t want you running out to make an unnecessary purchase, I’m sharing 3 of my favorite recipes here!

LIP SCRUB RECIPE (this is the base for all 3 mixtures)
3 Tablespoons of white granulated sugar
2 Tablespoons of coconut oil
1 Small drizzle of honey

#1: Rose Lip Polish
Add 20 Drops of the Multi-Use Petal Oil
This recipe is sure to moisturize and restore suppleness with Vitamin E, Almond Oil, and Apricot Oil.

#2: Lip Latte Scrub
Add half a tablespoon of finely ground coffee
The antioxidants in coffee while help prevent future damage to your lips while acting as an additional gentle exfoliant.

#3: Cinnamon Lip Exfoliator
Add a teaspoon of ground cinnamon
This ingredient will remove dead skin cells and bring oxygen to the surface to give you that lovely plumped effect.

DIRECTIONS
1: Combine all ingredients in small bowl and mix to create a granulated paste. If it’s too thin in consistency, add more sugar, if it’s too heavy, add more of your favorite nourishing oil or coconut oil. Store in small container with a tight lid for up to a month (refrigerate if you’re weird about leaving it out, haha)

2: Apply small amount onto lips and gently exfoliate 1-2 minutes. Leave mixture on for another 3 minutes or so, then rinse off with lukewarm water. Apply your favorite nourishing lip treatment or lip balm and snooze away. You’ll wake up to a perfectly polished and plumped pout!

Rather than making it an absolute part of your nightly regimen, add this step only when necessary. You’ll want to avoid over-exfoliating as it will cause irritation and strip your lips of their nutrients. I like to apply a collagen or hyaluronic acid serum onto my lips after this scrub to enhance results, so don’t be afraid to get creative with your products!

Perfume bottle and roses
Gabrielle Chanel – A Must Have Fragrance

I’m typically spontaneous and open to change, but when it comes to my favorite scent, I’m quite the creature of habit. For over a decade, I’ve worn Light Blue by Dolce and Gabbana, and also got a number of friends and family hooked on it. Because of my obsession with Light Blue, I never thought I’d connect with another scent. Chanel’s latest concoction, Gabrielle Chanel, totally changed everything for me.

Ironically, I was on vacation in Paris when I discovered the fragrance in a Chanel boutique. It was a unique, light, and lovely blend of scents. While I was immediately fond of Gabrielle Chanel, I was reluctant to commit to a new fragrance (I couldn’t cheat on D&G so easily, haha). My friend was also on the hunt for a new scent and quickly chose the perfume as “the one”. We couldn’t stop talking about how unique and soft it was, so not even 24 hours later, I literally ran to a Chanel boutique for my own bottle – it was exclusive to Paris at the time and couldn’t return home without it!

Chanel hasn’t launched a new fragrance in 15 years, so there is no doubt a lot of thought was put into it – the bottle alone took 5 years to design! Olivier Polge crafted the scent around the young woman, Gabrielle, who grew to become Coco Chanel. She was said to be radiant, rebellious, and a woman who allowed herself to be who she wanted to be. He’s confident the scent embodies Gabrielle.

As you can imagine, the fragrance is feminine, yet not too girly, classic, yet not predictable. It seems to be a universal fragrance suited for many, and the story behind the creation is enough to cause intrigue. Needless to say, I will be introducing my friends and family to it as I did Light Blue! I believe it can now be found in retailers across the globe, so do yourself a favor and pick up a sample of Gabrielle Chanel today.

Xoxo
